How to Change the User Name in Windows

Just like almost everything in Windows 10, you can change your user name quite easily. You can either do this through the Settings app or you can use the Run dialogue box to execute a simple command.

How to Change a Windows 10 User Name Using the Settings App

To change your account name through the Settings app:

Navigate to Settings > Account > Your info and click Manage my Microsoft Account. This will open the Microsoft Accounts settings in the default browser. Once the Microsoft Accounts website opens up, sign in with your Microsoft Account and hit Your info. Next, click on Edit name. In the panel that pops up, enter the new First and Last name, complete the Captcha security check, and hit Save.

Your account name/user name is now changed. The new user name will be visible the next time you sign in to your Windows 10 PC. And while we’re on the topic, did you know you can automatically sign into Windows 10?

How to Change a Windows 10 User Name Using a Run Command

To change your Windows account name using the Run dialogue box:

Press Win + R, type “control userpasswords2”, and hit Enter. In the User Accounts panel that pops up, select the user that you want to make the changes for under User Name and click on Properties. Enter the new name in the Full Name field in the next panel and hit Apply.

Do These Steps Change the Name of the User Folder?

When you choose a different username for your Microsoft Account/Windows PC, you will see the change reflected on the lock screen and in the Settings app, etc. But the username folder inside Users, the folder where Windows stores important files, will still display the name you used while setting up Windows for the first time.

That said, you can change the name of the “username” folder inside Users, although it is a bit more complicated, and we don’t recommend it if it isn’t absolutely necessary.

If you’re tired of your current username on Windows 10, it’s easy to change it. Hopefully, you’ve now got your account set up just the way you like it.
