Why Plex Users Want to Change Display Names
Aside from streaming your personal music collection to your mobile phone, many people use Plex to play music and movies on their home theater systems. However, as good as Plex is at streaming media, it’s had one annoying little glitch: users could not change their display names.
With this, Plex users were stuck with displaying their usernames on all Plex screens. Since most usernames are long or include email addresses, this was less than ideal.
Plex users have been complaining about this for years. The problem was first noted on Plex’s message boards back in 2014, resulting in a years-long thread with comments from hundreds of users asking for the ability to create custom display names.
How to Change Your Plex Display Name
After seven years, but Plex finally listened to its users and issued a fix to the issue. It’s relatively easy to implement, but only from the Plex Android or iPhone mobile app. You still can’t change display names from your computer.
To create a display name different from your Plex username, follow these steps:
In the Plex mobile app, tap the three-line (hamburger) icon to open the sidebar. Tap your profile image to display the My Profile screen. Select Edit Profile. Tap Full Name. Enter your desired display name. Tap Set Name.
On all relevant pages, you’ll now see your display name instead of your username.
Create a Custom Display Name on Plex
The large number of Plex users who’ve been lobbying for years for this feature can now rest easy. Plex finally responded to their requests and now any Plex user can set a descriptive display name separate from their username. This makes Plex just a bit friendlier and easier to use, which every Plex user should appreciate.
